How do I know what to say?
It is not always easy for people to figure out what to say. Different people have different approaches. It is important to let your representatives know:
- funding for mental health is important
- additional investment in mental health services is needed
- this issue is not republican or democrat because it impacts us all
- why mental health is personally important to you
Below is a template to help you get started:
Dear [representative’s name],
As your constituent, I am writing to urge you to expand mental health services and resources in our area. One in five Americans is living with a diagnosed mental health condition and 60% of those in need of mental health treatment do not receive it. This is not a democrat or republican issue- it affects us all and needs bipartisan solutions.
We know that early access to mental health services is essential to reducing the severity of mental health conditions. We also know that treating these disorders is a key factor in reducing the health care costs of our nation. Therefore, it is critical that we invest in better mental health services and treatments.
This issue is particularly important to me because (include personal story or share what inspired you to write this letter).
I believe you care about the mental health of Americans, so I urge you to make mental health funding a priority.
Thank you for your time and consideration on this matter.
